Pricing changes in March

Posted By: Vincent Sylvester
Posted On: 2024-02-04 05:00 AM

It annoys me to no end that everyone under the sun is chasing revenue in times of higher inflation, because it is entirely counterproductive to the problem. More than content to keep pricing as is for the last few years, but steep increases in cost of supplies are forcing my hand in this regard. Two of our suppliers have announced changes to the tune of 30% or more, which leaves no buffer to keep pricing as is. I still don't like the idea of passing on all of that to you, because that doesn't help anyone. Instead starting March 1st this year the pricing for most packages will change by about 5-10% at most. After that date the processing fees for every transaction will also change from 4% to 5% in order to al

2024 A year in review

Happy new year everyone!

2023 has come to a close and what a year it has been. A lot of things have happened. From new event spaces opening to new staff coming onboard to manage them. We have done a lot of work in the background to plan for the future and specifically this year 2024. A number of big changes are planned, but more on that when it is time. Just before Christmas we saw the 3000th resident sign up and the grid itself has grown over 200 square kilometers this year. We would like to thank everyone for making this another successful year. Let's be excited what 2024 brings!

Data can be pretty boring and beautiful

Could be throwing all sorts of buzzwords around, but in reality half the fun in statistics is gathering the data and watching it paint a picture. Analyzing the results and making predictions or changes is the part that makes it boring, that's just work. Over the last year we have been gathering information on how ZetaWorlds is used and what that says about the community and the grid as a whole. Adjusting how things are calculated and building more concise data points to give us information on how the platform is used and utilized. Sounds scary and invasive, but it's really just counting of what's already there. Outside of the grid stats data present on the World Map a

New Maptile rendering

Posted By: Vincent Sylvester
Posted On: 2023-03-02 08:16 AM
For the past few days we have been testing a new system for generating maptiles. Whereas previously the generation of the various zoom levels required to make the map zoomable, both in the viewer and on our world map, would be scheduled for generation whenever a region would present new tiles, the new system is decoupled from this and runs on its own schedule. The change was prompted by the ocean regions creating a mess of half-baked maptiles due to their quick restarts causing the scheduled maptile generation to basically trip over its own feet. This created gaps in the tiles and weird differences in how the various zoom levels looked. The changes made have the system check whether new tiles have been uploaded

Retirement of BulletSim

OpenSimulator is moving forward in development and unmaintained or incompatible code is being removed. As BulletSim has not seen a significant update in years, we are finally retiring its use on regions. ubODE, in comparison, is actively maintained and receives performance and bug fixes regularly. For those that still wish to use objects that require BulletSim, due to being improperly created, you can as a member of staff to look at having those objects fixed, but this is not a guarantee we can give either. Moving forward, with OpenSimulator getting a large upgrade to the new dotnet6 runtime, over the old and now sadly entirely abandoned mono, there are likely to be other changes that will come up. Price adjustment

With the economic situation everywhere going a bit sideways lately we are faced with ever increasing costs from our providers and while we normally try to shift things around to not burden our customers with any price adjustments, there just is not much we can do in this case. As you may have seen already, we have shifted some hardware around and reduced the overhead for internal operations a bit, but given the hefty increases from some providers we are forced to adjust our prices where applicable. Of course, as usual, this does not affect existing customers and those making a purchase before the 1st of October.

Starting then there will be changes to the Full Sim, Mini Sim and Oceanside Archipelago packa

[COMPLETED] Return to mainline

Scheduled Friday 19th of August

In a previous post we talked about rolling back the runtime underneath OpenSim in order to avoid a problem that was causing some regions to crash. While this rollback has stopped the issue we have been unable to otherwise reproduce the problem and conclude a potential fix for the cause. Neither a review of all concerning code nor the setup of testing environments yielded any further information, so we plan to return to the mainline version of the runtime and upgrade to its latest version in the knowledge that whatever the cause may be it does not lie solely with the runtime or OpenSim and must be something not normally checked for in any of the testing suites. As there is

It seems the most recent release of the runtime OpenSim uses, Mono, has not been a stable one as since the release we have recorded and abnormal amount of problems with various regions. As such we will be rolling back the runtime to the last known stable release on the 8th of July. We are actively tracking these issues, but their nature makes it near impossible to tell the cause and as the only information points at normally stable and failsafe code the culprit seems to likely be a bug in the runtime. Hopefully this bug will eventually be resolved at which point we will move back to the latest release, but the timeframe for this is unknown at the moment.

It has been a difficult decision to add the MuteList capability to the grid on the basis of what it does and doesn't provide and the general idea to keep communications open even if they are undesired. Unfortunately as the community grows the pains that result from human interaction are becoming more and more apparent. As such we decided to enabled the MuteList capability for the time being and see how that affects the community before either sticking with it or turning it off again. The hope is this will not result in hostilities over who blocks who or why and instead simply serve as a way to exclude unwanted communication. Of course any circumvention of the system or other behaviors covered under our rules wi

Pricing Adjustment

As many of you are acutely aware the current economic situation is troubling in many ways and we have felt the results of it as well. Over the course of the last year the operating costs have only been going up and despite our best efforts to lower expenditure there really is no way around the shifting cost index.

Since we don't want to increase the burden on those already counting their coins all existing region orders will remain untouched, but going forward some packages will have adjusted pricing to compensate for the increase in costs of providing them. Hopefully this turns into a temporary measure and we can return to our normal pricing soon.

CRITICAL - Disable "Everyone can Build" on your land!

Posted By: Edison Rex
Posted On: 2022-04-29 04:03 AM
This is an important requirement.
Regions and parcels MUST disable "Build: Everyone" on the parcel Options tab. You can set to group build, or set up an access list, but you must not allow unrestricted building on your land.

We have had recent instances of griefers dropping scripts onto land that's allowing build to anybody, this causes extra work to clean up. On the Free Estates this is now a requirement and I am updating both the rules and the covenants.
Even those running their own regions as selfhosts it makes sense to disallow everyone to build on them as regions found to be detrimental to grid after having been griefed will be removed and potentially

Sticky Honey Physics

It has been a wild ride in testing the last few days, but it seems to be nearing an end soon. Part of the push to actually rework some of the internal physics systems to allow more control and potentially one day enable more physics modes and features to work as specified some of the underlying code has been altered. This does have the immediate effect of avatar movement behaving quite a bit differently than before, which I'm sure becomes pretty evident as soon as the new binaries go live.

The changes made should allow more control over the avatar and fix some weird behaviors exhibited prior. For example, jumping now syncs with animation so you don't immediately jump up, but crouch first. This pre-jump

Suspension of the Free Estates Project - NOW RESUMED

Posted By: Edison Rex
Posted On: 2022-04-12 01:45 PM

Due to what appears to be abuse of the free estates, I am suspending new requests whilst I audit the entire web of ownership.

This is disappointing to me, I expected better of people. I will now audit all of the free estates parcel owners for similar MAC/IP, group nonsense, joined parcels, and overuse of prims.

This sort of behaviour is unacceptable and makes the regions perform well outside of the standard we expect. Not to mention that if you read the covenants, you agreed to abide by them.

As per the terms of service, I will reclaim regions from accounts who have fraudulently obtained them. Those accounts will no longer be eligible for free estates.

It seems the scripts inside these make use of Notecards to save certain data and overwrite this quite often resulting in Notecards being created at an alarming rate.

As changes have somewhat slowed down over the past few weeks we have made little changes, but that does not mean they are any less meaningful. Every bit counts as they say. The bugfixes, while minor, should help with some script related issues as well as improving loading of them. There is also a lingering issue with regions no longer sending data to users on the region, which weirdly was traced back to some seemingly innocuous changes from a few months ago. We are still looking into this issue as is core OpenSim, but it's easier to teach a horse to sing than to figure out exactly what line is the breaking change. Posted On: 2021-03-23 12:30 AM
In the continous effort to improve the grid infrastructure we have elected to increase the size of the two clusters we are operating in North America and Europe. The new hardware is already being setup and prepared for regions. We plan to start migration this week(22. March - 28. March). Migration of regions should take no longer than one or two hours per region, during which they will be unavailable. Please watch the popup notices for when cluster migration happens on your region.

On the North American side the new hardware is from a new provider we only recently started working with, so if you encounter issues after migration feel free to let us know.

Zetaworlds is 8 Years Old!

We have a birthday to celebrate! The Zetaworlds Grid is turning 8 this coming week. We last celebrated our birthday 3 years ago and we have a lot to celebrate.

We passed 14000 friendships, 1400 resident accounts, 350 groups, 5600 visitors and we now have a total land area of 580 square kilometers (264 square miles!). We are host to the largest navigable ocean in Opensim (as far as  we know) . We thank you, our Residents and Landowners, for your loyalty and support, and we look forward to many more >

Teleport Issues

Posted On: 2021-03-02 03:17 AM
Some of you may have already noticed this, lately from time to time teleports will fail effectively getting stuck on whatever region you are on. While we have already taken measures to combat the issue, we would still like to know whenever and wherever issues regarding teleports occur. From the initial investigation the cause is a change in core OpenSim, which, curiously without clear indication as to why, causes the presence transfer from one region to another to fail. Resulting in effectively jailing a user on a region with these changes. Largely said changes were rolled back for builds after 717 and are not present in builds before 690. As these are changes made by core we have been in contac

Today, Saturday 6 Feb 2021 I am upgrading the EU and NA cluster binaries to our newest stable version. There are numerous improvements, and many bugfixes.
It is important that ALL region owners reset your OSW beacons (they will be offline) if you have them, and any other scripts that had runtime settings (you used a menu to configure them).
Thanks for your cooperation.

New preconf build for selfhosters

Posted By: Vincent Sylvester
Posted On: 2021-01-24 09:55 AM
Since the grid is constantly upgraded, adding features, fixing bugs and optimzing performance, we regularly try to create new binary packages for those connecting their own regions. As these usually contain changes not directly critical to operation updating can be done whenever there is time. Unfortunately this time it is slightly different. Major changes to the connectors, the things that actually connect a region to the grid, have been made in order to improve asset handling and reduce resource usage on both ends. As such the upgrade to the latest binary, build 87, should be performed by all selfhosters rather sooner than later. We can still see a number of regions not upgraded to this version and will be

In the past we have received numerous offers from some of our residents in regards to what sort of contributions they could make toward the grid or if there are volunteer positions to be filled. It is nice to see there is a genuine interest to further the grid and its community and we wanted to offer some sort of task list or open positions that we would be happy to see filled. We hope this makes it easier for those looking to volunteer and help to pick out something they would like to do and feel comfortable with.

Self Host Group

ZetaWorlds offers many opportunities to be part of the community on the grid. One way is to SelfHost(connecting a region from your own computer or server), using our proprietary preconfigured binaries. There is now a group inworld for those of you interested in just that - ZetaWorlds Selfhosts. Please remember, we do not provide formal support for your regions but...if you spot a bug...let a staff member know. This new group will allow you SelfHosters to connect and share info to benefit everyone. Please note, we do require selfhosters to maintain decent service quality on their regions. Our aim is to keep ZetaWorlds as open as possible without compromising the performance of the grid service.

We hope you are well and are able to celebrate the holiday season. To take our minds off the current worldwide situation we are running a sale through the month of December. The ZetaWorlds ocean has been growing steadily since its inception and has just hit over 120 square kilometers of open area for sailing, boating and other activities. It thus feels right to allow more people to experience the vastness by making it easier than ever to get an adjacent property through our Oceanside package available here.

Selfhosting Changes

Posted By: Vincent Sylvester
Posted On: 2020-11-27 11:41 PM
We take pride in the open nature of ZetaWorlds and the fact that anyone can connect their own personal piece of land to the grid without much in the way of restrictions. This has been a key point of our philosophy for years and will continue to be a corner stone of our identity for the foreseeable future.

Nonetheless we feel the need to give our current set of rules for selfhosters a once-over as the grid expands and grows. Each region connected to ZetaWorlds requires the grid to provide certain services. These services are highly intertwined with each individual region in order to provide adequate and fast responses for common things happening on it. This subsequently means each region puts a cert

Gridservice Upgrades

As we continue to look for new ways to improve the service we provide we have recently started looking into a new way of splitting the grid services up to better distribute the load each individual part of the grid service is under. The new system is currently in testing and will be deployed once we are certain that all functionality is tested and confirmed working as intended.

In the meantime we have been upgrading the grid services we currently run to take advantage of some fixes brought about by testing we did in conjunction with Austin Tate of Openvue. As the changes are somewhat grave, especially in regards to presence and user handling, we would like to make sure they have not negatively impa

Nightly preconf builds

Posted By: Vincent Sylvester
Posted On: 2020-11-18 08:30 AM
A few days ago the automated testing system for our preconf binaries for selfhosters went live. These new binaries, unlike previously, are built automatically and tested for functionality through automated tests. This should improve the release cycle of the binaries due to manual testing often taking a few days to complete. This does mean these binaries are only tested in regards to basic functions, so some bugs may remain. New versions are uploaded when they are built, which may be infrequent. We will always retain a few versions in case a newer version proves to have issues, so you can always rollback. You can find the new binaries on the Host your own page</>

Upgrades for North America

Posted By: Vincent Sylvester
Posted On: 2020-08-07 02:41 PM
A few months ago we upgraded our EU-side of operations with the addition of a high IO database to provide better performance for heavily trafficked regions. Since then our operations across the pond have increased and so to provide equal service we have deployed a high IO database in North America as well. Regions that benefit from this will be switched over from our main clusters if they require more resources. This also has the effect of reducing the load on the clusters, which will make regions on them perform better as the load is better distributed. We will continue to upgrade our service in the future to adjust for increasing traffic, stay tuned.

Realistic Statistic

Posted By: Vincent Sylvester
Posted On: 2020-06-19 04:36 PM
For the longest time the way to calculate the active users has been to count how many users would login to the grid either locally or through the hypergrid. This was done by checking the table that held the local information of all users who connect to the grid. Checking for their visiting times in the last month would give you a number of how many visited. This number, however, only shows who was present at one point and not what real use they actually got out of the grid. If all they did was jump in, look both ways and then poof off to their next destination, can that really be considered use? We think for someone to really use our grid they must have spent some time, perhaps explored a few

Region Databases moving this weekend (EU Only)

Posted By: Edison Rex
Posted On: 2020-04-24 01:45 PM
A lot of perceived lag on regions, anywhere in Opensim, has to do with the components required to run a simulator (or a grid). Each region, as well as the grid asset store, has its own database. In some configurations (not ours), the database is run on the same host as the simulator. The disk IO required for communication between the simulator and its database can slow down simulators, especially with lots of prims and and big varsims. At Zetaworlds we run the region databases on a separate server which reduces the disk IO required on the simulator hosts. We are upgrading that database server this weekend for EU hosted regions and the EU asset server. The new server has more memory and solid

NEW BINARY IS AVAILABLE - Download the binary from the normal location (see Get Land - Self Hosted)
MAKE AN OAR BACKUP BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING
Your best option is to unpack the binary to a new folder and copy your Region.ini file in. You can copy your opensim.db file (your region contents) but you are better off saving an OAR from your original region and restoring it to the new binary. If you do not know how to make an OAR backup (in console, "save oar /path-to-file/name-of-file.oar") and you are confused about the load oar command, check with me (Edison).

We have received a few questions regarding DisplayNames, mainly if and when we will be implementing them on the grid. However, after careful consideration and quite a bit of internal debate we have drawn the conclusion that we will not be implementing them on the grid. There are a few reasons for that. Mainly the obfuscation of names, which will lead to confusion all the way to the inability to trace users in case of rule or guideline violations. Additionally the implementation as it exists is not up to the standards we commonly see and lacks specific safeguards against abuse or ways for the grid adiministration to see the underlying usernames. These, among other, reasons led us to decide ag

A word about bans...

We here at Zetaworlds like to be known as very tolerant. We have written our terms of service to be very permissive of quiet enjoyment of your regions and your experience on the hypergrid.
Our patience, however, can be worn very thin, and a few things will earn you a ban from Zetaworlds. Unrepentant, repeated antisocial behaviour is the most common route to a ban, and we have very little tolerance for abuse of the platform, or especially any abuse of our residents. We investigate reports of antisocial behaviour and will usually give warnings, but we will make the determination for a ban, which we consider to be an extreme end.

World Map Purge

One of those side effects of having a grid is that as regions come an go, their maptiles (the thing you see on maps) persists. Opensim does not come with many tools to deal with this, either. However we wanted to clean the world map up, so we have purged the entire set of map tiles for all regions. Zetaworlds hosted regions now have generated new maptiles and will show up on the map. Self hosted regions need to regenerate map tiles. You can do this either by restarting your region, or issuing the generate map command to your console. Once you have done that your region will show up on the world map again.

Self-hosting restrictions

At a time where some grids elect to charge per connected region we also face some consideration regarding the self-hosting on ZetaWorlds. Specifically since we have recently dealt with some abusive region owners breaching our terms and community guidelines. As I am very much against charging a "flatrate" for region connections on an "open" grid such as ZetaWorlds, said occurrences offer us some reason for concern. We do not wish this to be seen as a form of capital punishment for those properly following our community and self-hosting guidelines, but at the same time we have a directive that we still

There is an add-on that brings all of the search functions you find in your viewer, but I had to put everything in the right place.
If you are a landowner (hosted by us) you just need to check the "include in search" checkbox on your parcel tool.
If you are a self hoster you need to make a change in your gridcommon.ini which I will happily tell you how inworld.
The next version of the self host binary will have the fixes in place.

It is about 12 square kilometers of navigable ocean. We use ubODE physics, and we have plenty of boats available which can sail or motor on it. We also have aircraft which can fly over it.
There is a common sailing wind available which is tied to real life. This is another one of our projects which is related to the ocean. Real Life in this case is near Dover, UK, although we could pick somewhere else if we wanted to.

Posted On: 2017-10-05 04:17 PM

All the updates have been completed, not as planned, unfortunately, but everything is back up and running. Expect a few hiccups here and there while we tweak some things to increase performance and stability.

We hope this has not inconvenienced anyone too much if you experience any issues with the grid feel free to let a staff member know.

Region sales will be coming online soon, but we don't yet have a solid ETA and the least we want to give you a date we cannot adhere to.

Grid Maintenance (Grid Back Online)

Posted By: Timothy Rogers
Posted On: 2017-10-04 04:31 PM

The grid will be under going an asset server move at 6pm PDT tonight to our new EU Cluster. During this time, we recommend not uploading, creating, or working on no-copy items. We expect this to take no longer then 1 hour, however please note that due to DNS resolve times could vary from ISP to ISP.

Please note that we will also be working on migrating the actual grid to this new cluster as well tonight around 7pm PDT, which might result in you needing to restart your regions if you self host. If you have problems connecting your region, please feel free to comment below or contact us in world. If your DNS provider takes a long time to update DNS queries we suggest looking into

Starter Avatars

Posted By: Vincent Sylvester
Posted On: 2017-10-03 09:30 AM

After a rather long round of debugging we have indentified the cause of the starter avatars not functioning as they should. The applied fix should now allow any new residents to our grid to not start off as a cloud anymore.

Aditiondally to this we have deployed two clothing stores on the Welcome region so no one has to keep looking the same. We will be expanding these stores with content as time goes on. Ff you would like to contribute some content to them yourself, feel free to send us a message or contact us inworld.

Fresh New Hardware

Posted On: 2017-05-03 04:16 PM

Hardware is a bit of a stretch in regards to our official regions, because they are now within the cloud; That magical thing slowly taking over the entire internet. The reason for the move was the trouble we have been seeing with Welcome specifically. We have been unable to pinpoint what exactly is wrong with the region, but with it being moved onto a fresh new machine we are hopeful the problems are solved. We will continue to monitor it and feel free to let us know if you experience any issues. We have also quadrupled the size of the Sandbox region giving you more space to build.

Zetamex Network is delighted to announce the release of the Zetaworlds Opensim 0.9 r004-Dragon version for use in Zetaworlds Simulators.

Grid users can download this version at http://wiki.zetaworlds.com/doku.php/releasenotes:dragon-r004 - if you are a Zetaworlds hosted customer, you will be upgraded soon.

The interesting things you want to know about this upgrade are:

- ubODE support has been improved. You can elect to move to ubODE or you can stay with your existing physics - this is dependent on what mesh you have and how it behaves with ubODE. If you have questions about this, feel free to contact us. There has been a lot of discussion about ubODE and mesh;

Stats Flux Explination

Posted By: Timothy Hoxley

As some people may have noticed with our stats fluxing, we freely admit this. We are currently doing heavy load balance testing we want to make sure our system is able to handle the load of several thousand regions. We have posted about this on our main blog for Zetamex Network. However, we wanted to post it here as well so that it is clear. They are actual regions being placed online, and used for load testing. So the number are accurate however due to the testing which is ongoing our number will remain in flux till this is complete.

Thank you for your understanding.

Say hello to Jackal!

Posted By: Vincent Sylvester
Posted On: 2016-02-06 08:53 AM

The transfer to the new server, named Jackal, went smoothly and ZetaWorlds is back up and running.

In addition to upgrading the hardware we have started testing a new money module on the regions Gloebits 1 and Gloebits 2. As the name suggest they are running the Gloebit module, which is similar to OMC, but features a much more streamlined process and easier to use interface. Gloebit will be a hypergrid enabled currency, currently Hyperica is also testing this module.

Fresh new hardware

Posted By: Vincent Sylvester
Posted On: 2016-02-02 10:09 PM

ZetaWorlds will experience some momentary downtime on the 5th of February to complete our move to newer more powerful hardware. During the upgrade logins will be disabled to move over the grid database and asset server in a stale state, preventing potential dataloss. The move is estimated to take between 1 and 5 hours, if everything goes according to plan. Currently the upgrade is scheduled for 6am grid time. We hope you can excuse this momentary downtime for the benefits of newer more powerful hardware and thus a better experience for the future.

OMC Support and New Simulator Binaries

Posted By: Timothy Rogers
Posted On: 2016-01-01 08:02 AM

We are happy to announce that OMC is now in ZetaWorlds. This allows you to use money on your regions, this money is managed by VirWox, which adds a layer of security with each purchase needing to pass through a web page. What makes OMC our choice of currency is, that you must OPT-IN to it. This means if you do not wish to use it, you don't have to. If you choose to use it, just head over to Welcome and register at the giant spinning "V" by clicking on it and following the steps. OMC also brings new commerce to ZetaWorlds, as it allows purchases from people who are from other grids, even if their grid doesn't use OMC.

ZetaWorlds has released two new binaries with the OMC module pre

Mesh From Abroad Fixed

Posted By: Timothy Hoxley
Posted On: 2015-12-03 06:52 PM

We used to have an old issues where residents visiting other grids would have issues taking items back home, or even seeing mesh objects in other grids. We have since resolved this issue, you can now successfully visit other grids without missing scenery and bring back larger items from other grids.

The tech behind what happened was kinda silly on our part. We had fixed the packet size that can travel through our reverse proxy to our asset server to allow mesh on our grid, however the way that the viewer gets data from other grids to show in your viewer sends it to other parts of the robust to be forwarded to you. Since we learned this, we increased the max packet size on that particular robust ser

New Site Launched

Posted By: Timothy Hoxley
Posted On: 2015-10-17 10:04 AM

ZetaWorlds has officially launched our new website. It still is a little rough around the edges, but we are working on cleaning that up. We thank you all for your patience and your continued support of ZetaWorlds, and dealing with us as we continue to strive and get ZetaWorlds ready for our first major push in usage ever.

If you have any feedback, we ask you let us know in the comments below so that we can make improvements and help make ZetaWorlds a grid for you and not for us. As ZetaWorlds is a grid made by the users, for the users. Without you, we wouldn't even be a grid.

Thank You Again,

Zetamex Team
